About Buro Happold

We are a professional services firm providing sustainable and deliverable engineering consultancy, design, planning, project management and consulting services for all aspects of buildings, infrastructure and the environment. We were founded in 1976 and we now employ over 1700 people worldwide in our 27 offices in Europe, America, Asia and the Middle East.

The firm draws upon a wide range of disciplines depending on the needs of each project within a broad range of sectors including rail, transport, aviation, culture, water, education, energy, waste, retail, urban development, commercial and residential and healthcare. Our consulting services for project strategy and delivery also covers a broad range from asset strategy, economic development, integrated development planning, regional planning, sustainability and environment to organisational development, procurement and project management.

As engineers we understand how to develop optimal integrated solutions, which few other consultancies can match. Our clients involve us at all stages of the life of a project: from high-level pre-feasibility studies, through planning, design and construction management stages and often the testing and handover of the finished product.

Our teams are engaged on a wide variety and geography of innovative infrastructure design and development, from rapid assessment frameworks and consulting for the World Bank through to designs for zero energy cities in China and collaboration on smart cities with key industrial collaborators and partners. The firm’s sharply focused, multidisciplinary approach to design enables us to lead effectively across every stage of the planning, design and management of the delivery process. We have a deep knowledge of the industry and apply the same level of insightful thought and specialist expertise to every project we work on.

Our transport consultants provide advice and support on all aspects of transportation, movement and logistics (feasibility studies, transport planning, traffic engineering, highway engineering, infrastructure design, masterplanning, urban and public realm design, logistics advice, travel planning, people flow and transportation modeling). With a wide range of experience gained on a variety of large-scale developments and regeneration projects worldwide, we pride ourselves on our close-knit partnerships with clients and local authorities to implement workable, economical and sustainable solutions, enabling cities, communities and businesses to function successfully both now and into the future. We work with architects and urban designers, as well as other professionals to understand and optimise space layout designs and operational management strategies. We also focus on achieving a balanced, multi-modal approach to transport planning, ensuring that the challenges of congestion and carbon footprint are reduced through creating solutions that integrate public transit networks and services.

Highway, bridge, utilities and ground engineering also form a key part of our Infrastructure group. Our approach on all urban strategies and masterplan projects is holistic and these teams work on some of the most high profile and ambitious projects in the world. The projects vary greatly in terms of size: from the local integration of a building development into a neighbourhood, up to the master planning of the entire infrastructure backbone for a new city or region. As part of a broader design practice, we are able to draw on a dynamic range of skills from across the company and with a track record in both public and private sector projects to tackle the most complex of challenges.

Our Environmental Consultancy is able to assess and guide the approach to our many projects and enable us to develop solutions that are not only at the forefront of sustainable (low energy design and low-carbon) design but often result in projects that positively enhance the natural environment and local eco-systems. Our constant ambition is to ensure that our designs solutions work not only effectively for today but have the ability to adapt readily to the expected changes that will occur in future years.

We aim to help our clients and the project teams we work with to procure infrastructure networks and buildings that are sustainable and environmentally responsible, working within the requirements of national and local government rules and regulations.  At the same time, we are confident in our abilities to promote change or new ways of tackling projects to deliver smarter solutions, backing our consultancy advice by way of our international experience and our in-house research and applied technologies teams.
